You believe in your story. I surrender to it. Capture it. And hand it back to you in a way you can remember forever.

You're about to embark on the most wonderful of adventures. Because you're here that tells me you value epic, mind-blowing photography. Well done!

I'm fortunate, and sometimes I have to pinch myself when I think about how much I love what I do. I illustrate every story you trust me with.

Incredible photographs result from a trusted relationship between us. This comes from a friendship, and from time invested in getting to know you, and why you have chosen the different elements that will make up your wedding day. Think of me as a visual biographer of sorts, a narrator, telling your story through the images of your day.

I want you to be blown away by how beautiful you really are, by how beautiful I see you to be.

Lets get started!

+ you are beautiful

Wedding venue: Married Ella and Daniel

by August 7th, 2017 No Comments »

Among the several things on your “to do” list after getting engaged is booking your wedding venue. Pronto. The really great ones book up quick. And it’s a good thing that’s exactly what Ella and Daniel did after he proposed because the Historic Meeting House at New Garden provided just the right setting for their storybook outdoor wedding dreams.

Both Ella and Daniel enjoy the outdoors and wanted to commit themselves to each other in front of a small, intimate group of family and friends, standing next to a rushing creek, under a canopy of trees, sunlight streaming through the leaves on their faces, with a showering of cottonwood at just the right moment and made us all take a deep sigh, believing in the power of love.

To make your day flow as smoothly as possible, make sure your venue dressing room(s) have plenty of room to spread out. There are dresses to hang, make up and hair stations that need to be set up, plenty of space to not only put your bags BUT also hide them later when the photography begins, and as always proximity to restrooms is important. From a photography perspective, natural light is always a big bonus, as well as there being an alternate room where the bride and bridesmaids can stash their bags, coffee cups, loose hangers, flip flops, make up, robes, etc… because when it comes time to begin photographing the bride putting on her dress you’ll want all of those distracting elements out of the room so they don’t clutter up your photographs. I really can’t stress this enough.

The weddings I’ve photographed at New Garden have always been outside. It’s the perfect place not only because it’s beautiful, but they also offer a rain plan. The meeting house itself can be a space for a last minute indoor ceremony or in the case of Ella and Daniel’s wedding, it offered additional space for getting ready and some indoor photography options, keeping us out of the heat and humidity.

You’ll notice the elegant WORKING chandelier hanging from the rustic doorway that provided a beautiful backdrop to the ceremony (above). These elements are provided by The Historic Meeting House at New Garden. The owners, Lisa and Chris, have to be some of the most attentive hosts, and not only offer these visual delights as options but also set everything up for you. Ella offers a piece of advice, “If you don’t have to do it yourself, don’t, and hire it done. We did almost everything ourselves and it was fun, but your lives don’t stop just because you’re getting married. Any bit of stress that you can take off of yourself is definitely worth it.”

A wedding day is loaded with memories. Ella and Daniel recall their favorite moments from the day below.

Ella: Daniel’s face when he first saw me during our first look, and walking down the aisle and seeing all of our hard work come together and how blessed we really were to be able to pull the wedding off.

Daniels: When people were speaking and praying blessings over us, and when we said “I do” to each other.

Ella, studying business at IU East, and Daniel, head chef at The Kitchen, have an admiration for each other’s qualities that made them decide this was “the one”. For Daniel, it’s Ella’s beautiful heart for others and her amazing joy in every situation.

For Ella, it’s Daniel’s gentle and selfless way of going about life that demonstrate he is a Christ seeking and fearing man. He always asks how he can do others justice or how he can simply improve his own everyday life to make it the best it can be for both of them.

It was a joy to spend the day with Ella, Daniel and their families. One day, I’m hoping they can build their house on the property we did their engagement shoot at and they have years of love to follow.

xoxo

Richmond-Indiana-Christmas-Wedding: Ellie + Ian

by March 4th, 2017 3 Comments »

A Christmas Wedding

“She is SO personable. She does not know a stranger, and I love that about her. She is family-oriented, and has the most beautiful smile.

wedding photography

“He is always up for having a good time, he is caring and generous, he is friendly, and HILARIOUS! I always feel safe when he is around, and I feel a bit empty when I am apart from him.”

If you’re a former bride of mine, you might recognize Ellie. She’s been my assistant at plenty of weddings. But on this day she took her turn among the STP brides. Ellie and Ian tied the knot on a rainy December day. I have to confess, I was a little concerned. A white dress and styled hair on a rainy, cold day might not make for a good outcome. But if anyone could shrug it off, it’s Ellie. And she did, for this Christmas Wedding.

wedding photography

The two met through a mutual friend years ago, and after several years of dating, friends and family realized they were destined for a long life of love and commitment. Ian proposed during homecoming week-end at Purdue, their alma mater. We went back to the site of the proposal for their engagement photographs. If you missed it, catch up here!

“The whole wedding day was amazing. Our favorite part was sharing such a special time with so many people we love. It was an awesome feeling having so many close friends and family members there to celebrate US and our love. The best part of the day was the fact that we made a vow to spend the rest of our lives with our best friend.”

I always ask married couples if they have advice to bestow upon newly engaged couples. After all, its good to have advice first-hand.  “Don’t blink, said Ellie. The day goes by way too fast. Don’t worry about pleasing everyone else, they are there to celebrate your love. So be in love. Make it the most perfect day with your closest friends, family members, and your new spouse, no matter the weather!”

Ellie and Ian, thank you for picking me to capture the love between the two of you. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for you!

Indianapolis, IN, Indiana State Museum Wedding: Melissa and Ryan

by January 24th, 2017 No Comments »

Indiana State Museum wedding photography

They opted for a small wedding at the Indiana State Museum on the Canal in Indianapolis, IN, and had the people who love them most in the world in the room to celebrate. After 11 years together — to the day, they enjoyed each other, their love and celebrating finally becoming husband and wife.

Melissa and Ryan first became best friends, talking on the phone every day and hanging out. After a year of being best friends, they both knew they had fallen in love with the other and decided to start dating. Melissa moved to Indianapolis after she graduated college and a year after the move, they moved in together and started their journey together.

It’s hard to narrow it down to a couple of things you admire in a person you’re in love with, but Melissa summed up her feelings well. “Ryan has always amazed me with his hard work and drive. Once he puts his mind to something, he will do everything in his power to make it a reality. He has a sense of humor that cannot be beat, on even my worst days, he can always manage to put a smile on my face. We have so many great memories just laughing together and being silly. His loyalty to me and those he loves is beyond measure. Ryan is always there for anyone who needs him, he is willing to drop anything to talk to me or a friend after a bad day, give advice or just listen.”

Ryan’s top of the list when it comes to Melissa is her selflessness. “Melissa always puts other peoples needs before her own, 100% of the time. She enjoys being there for people she loves and helping them with any problem, celebrating their successes and loving unconditionally, her drive and work ethic–it was one of the things that pulled us together to begin with. I have always been impressed with her business sense. She has always had big dreams and worked hard to accomplish them. I also admire Melissa’s dedication to family. She has a strong love and dedication to her family and closest friends. She has always put these people first and cherishes the time she gets to spend with those she loves.”

Indiana State Museum wedding photographyThe Oceanaire, where their wedding reception was held, holds special memories for the two of them. They dined there on the night Ryan asked Melissa to be his wife. Being foodies, they had a wonderful dinner, then went to Christmas at the Indianapolis Zoo, something Melissa had been wanting to do for years.  After a few hours of walking around and looking at the zoo lights (and animals), Ryan pulled Melissa off to a quiet, private area next to the Lions Den, dropped to one knee and asked Melissa to marry him. Ryan pulled the most beautiful ring out of his coat pocket and the rest is history.

A Doctor Who, Richmond, Indiana Wedding: Cassie and Kyle

by November 9th, 2016 No Comments »

Doctor Who Wedding

What started off as a quick glimpse at work and eventually a facebook friendship, turned into a date and the realization for Cassie that she had just met the man she knew she would marry. What Kyle calls Cassie’s “geek-chic style” fascinated him, and five months later he proposed, offering Cassie an engagement ring that had been handed down from his great-grandmother.

Cassie and Kyle both work in the social work field, advocating for children and families, which seems fitting when both describe each other as loving and compassionate.

They both have a bit of advice to pass along to engaged couples: simplify your wedding for less stress, and don’t get wrapped up into things that might be an over-the-top production because in the end its about two people committing their lives to each other and coming together as one. Expect an element of unpredictability throughout the day, laugh and try to be gentle and kind to people along the way.

Kyle’s favorite part of this Dr. Who wedding day was seeing Cassie walk down the aisle for the first time, taking her hand and placing the ring on her finger. You can see the joy on his face as they recess back up the aisle.  They both agreed that a very special part of the day was when they kissed as husband and wife.

We were able to steal away for a few minutes during the day for a couple of shots in the Rose Garden at Glen Miller Park.

Cassie and Kyle, thank you for giving me the honor of witnessing your love from a front row seat, and capturing the connection between you.

xoxo

Indianapolis Museum of Art Wedding, Indianapolis, Indiana: Maria and Tom Part 2

by October 1st, 2016 No Comments »

As promised, here is the final part of Maria and Tom’s Indianapolis Museum of Art wedding. In case you may have missed part 1, you can catch up here.

One of their unique elements of their wedding celebration was the “Colombian Dance Party” during the reception where they played traditional Colombian music. For the first dance, they chose “Fly Me to the Moon” by Frank Sinatra, as the bride grew up listening to it with her father, but as a surprise for the guests, they also danced Colombia Salsa right after.

Maria and Tom loved the big floor to ceiling windows at their venue because they could bring the outdoors inside and enjoy the sunlight coming in. The IMA gardens were the perfect location for a romantic ceremony, and being surrounded by trees and lush flowers was perfectly in line with their natural wedding theme.

maria-and-tom-940_stomp

I like to ask each bride to pass on something they learned through the wedding planning process. Maria encourages everyone to enjoy every minute of the big day! “I know everyone says it will go by fast, but it’s hard to explain how fast it actually is. Pay attention to all of the details you planned for so long the day of. Even if it is just for 5 seconds, make sure to stare at those gorgeous details you came up with. And if something goes wrong, let it go, no one else will notice, and all that matters is that you have the love of your life by your side. And lastly, stay together on the dance floor. It was amazing how this made all of the guests come and join us” stated Maria.

Maria’s view:

Tom was and is extremely funny! I remember this exact text he sent me right when we met that still makes me laugh, it was so relaxing to be with him and I still cannot stop staring at his beautiful blue eyes! Tom is so smart and a hard worker, and since we met I’ve been extremely inspired by his tremendous work ethic. Tom is always extremely kind and sweet and always finds a way to make me smile. I am extremely lucky to get to spend the rest of my life with him.

He has made me want to work harder for my dreams, because he showed me that working hard pays off, and I knew with him by my side I could accomplish anything. He has always been there for me, his unconditional love, support and companion, even when we were in different countries.

Tom’s view:

Maria is sexy and smart. When I met her, she was doing research at MIT, and has since gotten a Master’s from Duke. Each day, I am in awe of how incredibly intelligent and business savvy she is, and how she can do things that I can’t even begin to do half as well as her. She’s relentlessly enthusiastic and happy, and enjoys life more than most people. When she really gets happy, she’ll actually squeal, which is incredibly endearing. She’s contagious with how she views life. Nobody I know deserves the good things that happen to her more than Maria, and I plan to dedicate my life to ensuring that those good things keep on coming. I’m wildly in love with this gorgeous, brilliant woman, and I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with her.

I’ve loved getting to know Maria and Tom, and I was honored to spend such a special day with them. Gratitude goes out to all the wonderful vendors below for making the day run smoothly and for the fantastic memories.

xoxo

Indianapolis Museum of Art Wedding, Indianapolis, Indiana:: Maria and Tom

by September 23rd, 2016 No Comments »

I’m beyond excited to share this wedding with you, and admittedly I know the post will be long. Sorry. I’m going to break it up for you in hopes you’ll return next week to read the rest.

Maria and Tom’s wedding was a myriad of  classic taste, culture, beauty, fantastic planning and above all else a display of incredible LOVE at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. A photographer’s dream. There is a lot to show and tell.

maria-and-tom-4_stomp

I’ve gotten to know Maria and Tom over the past year and what strikes me about them is the connection between their hearts. From their romantic engagement session, the pre-wedding love letters they wrote to each other, special gifts for each other to their heartfelt vows, there is no doubt they are the love of each other’s lives. What a beautiful thing to witness.

Maria and Tom wanted their wedding to be timeless and elegant, but also fresh and natural. They wanted to highlight both Indiana and Colombia in our big day to recognize both of our cultures. They wanted our guests to leave saying it was the most fun wedding ever. Dancing was important to Maria and delicious food was important to Tom.

They planned for an elegant garden wedding, with lots of natural and organic elements as well as modern and luxury details. Lush florals and lots of greenery was a big part of the décor. Maria wanted to bring the garden theme of the ceremony into the reception room. The groom grew up on a farm and the bride in Colombia, so nature has  always surrounded them, and is a big part of their lives.

A couple of interesting details that you might not realize by simply looking through the images: Tom’s dad and brothers cut each of the wood slabs that held the escort cards from their family farm trees. Tom’s mom  handpicked the ferns to be used in the floral arrangements. Their gorgeous welcome sign was hand carved and shaped by Tom’s brother-in-law. He cut the tree himself and shaped it into a rustic sign.

The favors were Colombian coffee beans covered with chocolate that the Maria’s family brought all the way from Colombia. They hand-tied them with gold ribbon and put a tiny Colombian flag on each of them.

The petals for the aisle were flown all the way from Bogota, Colombia.

A favorite moment was when Maria and Tom read their personal vows to each other. There was crying and smiles as they declared their love and made heartfelt promises. Maria’s dad could not attend the wedding due to health reasons, and when Tom promised Maria a second ceremony in Colombia so her dad could walk her down the aisle, she broke into tears. Highlighting both cultures, the ceremony readings were spoken in both Spanish and English.

Next week I’ll share the a m a z i n g details that put their reception over the top, provided by a group of fantastic Indianapolis wedding vendors.

Bridal Portrait Project :: Richmond, Indiana

by May 11th, 2016 2 Comments »

Nature often helps me reset my brain when getting bogged down with daily work. So I took the opportunity to give myself a break and have some fun with a beautiful soul, Bita, for a personal photo project I’ll call “Nature’s Bride.”  We weren’t communing with nature necessarily but wanted to incorporate a sense of nature into the work. With no real pressures, this project was just what I needed…to be able to play for a couple of hours.

Bita (pronounced Bee-ta) is a recent Earlham College graduate. Her Instagram profile reads “Humanitarian, Dancer, Actress, Filmmaker, Photographer.” She is incredibly talented and has a way with the camera.bridal gown, wedding dress, bridal headpiece, wedding photography, indianapolis wedding photography, styled shoobridal gown, wedding dress, bridal headpiece, wedding photography, indianapolis wedding photography, styled shoo

Brandon Stanton thinks so too. You know him. HONY (Humans of New York). Bita was all “high-fashion” with Ameila Stanley at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in 2013. She decided to explore this chaotic place and suddenly saw Brandon Stanton behind her–so she taped his shoulder and told him that she was a huge fan of his work, especially Humans of Iran since she is Iranian. He said, “Let’s go take a photo.”  They had a pretty long conversation and she was featured on the site.

Marking the most of every moment, Bita has interned with the Joffrey Ballet company, participated in the New York Arts Program, and is now off to graduate school in the fall, studying of course, dance.

The shoot was done with various mixes of two Elinchrome Quadra’s, a beauty dish, 6 ft. softbox, white walls and natural skylight. Here are a couple of outtakes from our late afternoon playing around.

Indianapolis Indiana Wedding Photographer :: The Father Daugher Dance

by April 18th, 2016 2 Comments »

Bride dancing with her father

I always tear up during the Father Daughter dance. The symbolism of the dance, even though the father has already given away his daughter by this point in the day, means more to me now than ever.

As time marches on, I’m forced to realize that we won’t always have our fathers. Or that the passage of time may change our fathers in ways we never imagined. Could it really have been 25 years ago that I danced with my own father on my wedding day? What I remember the most was how we glided across the dance floor together in big sweeping motions. I’m sure to the guests watching us it didn’t appear as graceful as it felt, but for that moment in time we were Fred and Ginger. The thing that puzzles me is I can’t find a photograph of us dancing. Was it that one wasn’t taken or for some reason did I not order one?

And so, as a photographer, capturing this moment in time for every bride and her father is almost as important to me as the bride and groom shots. Sure, it’s great to have an artistically composed photo of this moment but more than anything it’s something to jog the memory long after the cake has been cut and the flowers have been thrown. What did you talk about with your dad during the dance? Could either of you really dance or did you just have fun faking it? Maybe your dad took that opportunity to tell you something very meaningful, like how proud you’ve made him over the years or how much he loves you. Or maybe you didn’t talk at all, but just shared the moment together.

And what is your father thinking as he dances with you? As he holds the hand of his grown daughter during this dance, does he reflect back to a day when he held that same, but much smaller hand as you and he crossed the street together? Can his strong hand still protect the woman that little girl has grown into? And where did the time go?

I’m the mother of two daughters. I imagine someday I’ll be watching my girls dance with their dad and memories will come flooding back…their father holding them as a new baby, teaching them how to ride their bikes, pulling their first loose tooth, teaching them how to drive and moving them to college. And I realize not only will it be hard for me to let go of them, but watching my husband symbolically “let go” may be almost as difficult if not more.

So, take it from me, even if you don’t see the value in it now, make sure you keep a photo of you and your dad dancing. Someday, it will mean the world to you.

Outdoor Indiana Wedding part 2: Whitney and Josh

by February 1st, 2016 2 Comments »

One of life’s great pleasures is what we experience. The things we do and the memories we make outlast any of our material possessions. Don’t get me wrong, it’s fun to enjoy nice things, but at the end of our life, we won’t be reminiscing over what we owned. We’ll relive experiences that felt surreal at the time. Whitney and Josh’s outdoor wedding is one of those experiences that must have felt very surreal to them and live in their memories forever.

Josh's expression is priceless as he sees his bride for the first time.

Josh’s expression is priceless as he sees his bride for the first time.

Their "first look" session.

Their “first look” session.

The first blog post (here in case you missed it) showed the excitement of getting ready for the big day. Toasts with friends, applying make up, pinning on boutonnieres, and a beautiful dress waiting to be stepped into.

This post is more about the unique love Josh and Whitney share. They were introduced to each other by a mutual friend at a golf tournament. Josh remembers, “I couldn’t stop thinking about this beautiful woman I had met, and once I heard she was single, I jumped at the opportunity to get together to play some golf. After a few times, I finally asked her on a real date. The rest is history.”

As we walked the grounds of her parents property, I noticed how their energies worked together. Every time they looked at one another there was a light that shone on their faces. When I saw the shot below, I knew it would tell the story to perfection!

Josh knew how much Whitney loves her childhood home and all of the good times that come with it. He couldn’t think of a better place to ask her to make the transition to become his wife. And when the weather cleared up after a bout of rain he talked her into going out for a walk on her parents’ property to let their dog, Baxter, run around and explore as they walked through the woods.

“Little did she know, I had planned to propose in the very woods that helped shape her into the amazing woman she is,” said Josh.

“I had no idea, I just thought we were getting some exercise and enjoying the outdoors. But we stopped, Josh started asking me questions that led into a marriage proposal; I couldn’t have been any more shocked or happy,” exclaimed Whit.

Josh mentioned, “It was awesome, her parents were there; we got to have this special and intimate moment with two of the most important people in her life in a place that will forever hold a special place in her heart.”

Reflecting back on the wedding day is a time full of emotion as you look through your photographs together and talk about what you remembered the most. “I don’t know if I can pick one part of our wedding as our favorite, ” said Whitney. “Getting ready with all of my girls was so much fun. Music has been such a big part of my life; hearing all of the songs in celebration of us made me so happy, I can’t stop replaying our playlist. But I have to say, the best part was simply officially being one with my man in the eyes of God and the law.”

Josh’s favorite part of the wedding day was turning around to face all their family and friends as husband and wife for the first time. He also values the ritual of combining his family (with his two girls) with Whit as one.

Whitney: “One of the things I find most endearing about my husband is his non-judgmental outlook on life and others. He understands different people handle things different ways and isn’t bothered by it, in fact, he embraces it. Josh also doesn’t know a stranger, his ability to strike a conversation with any and everyone is astounding. He has such a warm, inviting smile that I love waking up to every morning. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. But the thing I find most endearing is his love for his two girls. Hailey and Zooey are lucky to have a dad who cares as much as he does, he would give them the world if he could.”

A new family begins.

A new family begins.

Josh: “If I had to narrow it down to just three things endearing about Whit; the first would be her heart. She is the most kind person I have ever known, she’s always looking out for the well-being of those around her. She is also the most loving person, there is nothing about her that is less than unconditional. The next would be her faith in both God and our love. She puts both of those things at the top of her life and I couldn’t be more thankful for it. She is truly amazing.”

May life forever be as sweet as it is right now. xoxo

Outdoor Indiana Wedding: Whitney and Josh

by January 7th, 2016 5 Comments »

Ohhh where do I even start with these two? I have far too many favorites from this beautiful, outdoor wedding.

Whitney and Josh are everything I look for in my couples….SO in love, a beautiful artistic style, a love of all things visual and soulful, and so much positivity and gratitude in their hearts. This day was not just about coordinating a beautiful wedding, but the beginning of living a meaningful marriage.

In this first post, I’ll share several of my favorite wedding preparation candids and detail shots. And yes, there will be post #2 coming soon because there are that many images of some amazing details that everyone out there planning a wedding will want to see.

The wedding took place at Whitney’s childhood home. Packed full of memories of all the things families go through together, this seemed like such a fitting place for the official beginning of their life together.

So many of the “getting ready” images focus on the bride and bridesmaids. But on this particular day, I found the tenderness between Josh and his mom extra special.

_M6C9824_stomp

One of the fun things about a wedding taking place around the home is the opportunity to catch glimpses of everyday life amidst the fanfare.

Those eyes! Whitney is a makeup artist and hair stylist (Whitney’s Art of Hair Design), and did not only her own makeup but some of the other girls too.

_M6C0560_stomp

The afternoon was full of cheers and tears (happy ones of course!)

_M6C0398_stomp

I’ll end with a glimpse of what’s to come.

Until next time xoxo
