You believe in your story. I surrender to it. Capture it. And hand it back to you in a way you can remember forever.

You're about to embark on the most wonderful of adventures. Because you're here that tells me you value epic, mind-blowing photography. Well done!

I'm fortunate, and sometimes I have to pinch myself when I think about how much I love what I do. I illustrate every story you trust me with.

Incredible photographs result from a trusted relationship between us. This comes from a friendship, and from time invested in getting to know you, and why you have chosen the different elements that will make up your wedding day. Think of me as a visual biographer of sorts, a narrator, telling your story through the images of your day.

I want you to be blown away by how beautiful you really are, by how beautiful I see you to be.

Lets get started!

+ you are beautiful

Baby Bump Beautiful:: Indiana Maternity and Newborn Photography

She’s graceful. Light on her toes, even being several months pregnant. Erica was in her fifth season with the Dayton Ballet and had just finished the most recent production of the all time holiday favorite “The Nutcracker” right before our photo shoot.  A Butler University grad, Erica spent her summers in dance workshops in New York and traveled to Cape Town, South Africa to perform a world premiere ballet before marrying Clark, one of the most big-hearted dentist I know.

When we set up a date for our photo shoot, none of us knew just how cold it was going to be. To get  that “just right light”, we met at 7:45 in the morning at one of my favorite spots where the light is always magical.

Totally worth rising early! I could pile on the layers of clothes, but Erica and Clark had to tough it out for the sake of some amazing shots. Between shivering and teeth clattering, they pulled it off.

Now it gets even more amazing. Erica wanted to capture her love of dancing. Being very pregnant, she managed to change into her tutu (in the car!), walk though several inches of snow (with Clark’s assistance) and pose for some more great shots.

Next week, you’ll find out…was it a boy or a girl?

Maternity: Brittany + Ryan

by January 10th, 2013 No Comments »

One pose (seriously would I ask her to move more than necessary?), two different looks. Brittany and Ryan chose their home to set the stage for their maternity photographs and it was there I learned that not only did both Ryan and Brittany serve our country (Ryan served in the United States Marine Corps and Naval Academy, Brittany in the United States Army), but that this momma-to-be deployed to Iraq in support of Operation New Dawn where she served as a line pilot, Battle Captain, and a Flight Company Platoon Leader. Pretty impressive Brittany.

I love the peaceful look on Brittany’s face in this shot. She looks totally at home with Ryan.

As of this post, little Eli hasn’t made his way into the world yet (any moment now), but when he does he’s got two great parents ready and waiting.

Baby Makes Three

by August 21st, 2009 1 Comment »

My friend Antoine recently had her first baby. As a fellow creative and accomplished artist, (check out her work at www.antoineart.com) Antoine was all for capturing stages of her pregnancy in an artful way. I’ve been wanting to share these images I took of her for awhile, and the birth of her son inspired me to finally post a few maternity images. If your a fan on Facebook (facebook.susannatanner.com), you may have already seen the first two images, but keep scrolling!

Session I

Session II

The unfortunate part is that Antoine and her husband relocated to another state mid-pregnancy. Our plan to capture her growing belly to the end was halted. But the other day I received a wonderful message and photo (below). The baby had arrived and Adian was welcomed into the world by two wonderful, loving parents.

Form and Line in Figure Study

by January 14th, 2008 1 Comment »

I wanted to share one of my favorite photographs that resulted from a figure study photography shoot I did a couple of months ago. In the last year I’ve found myself more interested in photographing nudes. The clean lines and geometric forms found in the human figure are facinating. It’s amazing how nature automatically gives us the very material that winds up as inspiration for not only great mediums in art but also day to day design.

With Child

Just about any part of the body can speak at length of the rest. We can isolate various parts of the body to demonstrate various curves, shapes, or even emotion…the triangular effect of a bent elbow, the swan like curve of neck as it slopes down into the back, or the entwined arms of lovers. But I like the flowing symmetry of the entire figure, how one line flows to a different curve to create a balance. And when you throw in the use of light and shadow to emphasize various elements, the perfection is emphasized that much more.

I’m grateful to the model featured for sharing such a personal moment in time. What better example of form and line than that of a woman with child. The nude is classic, timeless, elemental, primal, and universal. Because we are all creatures of our own nakedness, it is the subject of ultimate empathy. And yet in the hands of an artist, that fleeting, imperfect, and fragile package that carries all of our souls gains a noble immortality and perfection that transcends its mere physicality.
