You believe in your story. I surrender to it. Capture it. And hand it back to you in a way you can remember forever.

You're about to embark on the most wonderful of adventures. Because you're here that tells me you value epic, mind-blowing photography. Well done!

I'm fortunate, and sometimes I have to pinch myself when I think about how much I love what I do. I illustrate every story you trust me with.

Incredible photographs result from a trusted relationship between us. This comes from a friendship, and from time invested in getting to know you, and why you have chosen the different elements that will make up your wedding day. Think of me as a visual biographer of sorts, a narrator, telling your story through the images of your day.

I want you to be blown away by how beautiful you really are, by how beautiful I see you to be.

Lets get started!

+ you are beautiful

He was smitten with her from the very beginning. “I remember the first time that I saw Maria, which was in the downstairs lobby of the condominium complex where I was living in Boston. I thought she was beautiful. Then she opened her mouth, and that lovely, thick Colombian accent came out. She immediately went in for a big, warm hug, showing me how friendly Colombians are,” said Tom. “We went dancing that night. I’m not big on dancing, but I definitely wanted to dance with her.”

This was one of the "moments in-between".

This was one of the “moments in-between”.

Tom and Maria’s relationship has involved their families since the beginning . Tom has been to Colombia 3 times to spend time with Maria’s family, and Maria has spent multiple weekends and holidays with Tom’s parents. With Maria’s family being out of the country, Tom’s parent have placed a significant role in her life and they have been extremely supportive of their relationship. They wanted to take the pictures at a special place for both of them, and Tom’s parents house (where Tom grew up) was the perfect choice. They love relaxing by the fire in the fall making s’mores (Maria is addicted to them since she first tried them after moving to the U.S.), they love drinking wine while relaxing at night, and after four and half years of dating they can hardly stop snuggling each other. “Through the years we’ve had many special moments around Tom’s parent’s house and its important to have these photographs to remind us of all of the memories we have built at this place,” said Maria.

This is one of my favorite images from the engagement session. Tom and Maria looked as if they were completely "at home" with each other, no matter where they might be. The essence of each couple is so important to find.

Tom’s mom, Cheri, generously took her time to stylize the photo shoot down to the smallest of details. During the shoot it began to rain and while the rest of us dashed into the house waiting for it to pass, Cheri was under a tree, keeping the campfire ablaze.

In roughly a year Tom and Maria will say their “I do’s” and lucky me, I’ll be there to capture all the moments between this beautiful couple.

Several times a year I get to play around with fashion photography for the folks at Talent Fusion. It’s a fun day of fashion photography. Talent Fusion is a full service model & talent agency, providing actors for TV, Film, commercials, web and industrial videos; as well as models for commercial print, advertisements, and runway, as well as placing models and talent in national markets such as New York, Los Angeles and  international Asian modeling markets.

Last weekend one of the models I photographed was Reagan. New to the city, she is bright, fresh, and beautiful.

Behind every great shoot is an amazing make up artist. Ella Hattery Rollins did an amazing job. Not only is she talented, but put the models at ease so that by the time I photographed them they were relaxed for their shoot. Even though it can be a busy day, it’s always fun working with this team of creative individuals.

Creative Senior Picture Photographer, Richmond, IN Professional Portrait Photographer:: Holly

by July 18th, 2013 No Comments »

She’s ready to make her mark in the world. Ready to take on the next adventure life has to give her. Meet Holly. She’s got an infectious smile and a gleam in her eye.

_M6C4525T_stompAbove: No photoshop tricks. Yep those are really the tree blossoms showering down around her. We timed it just right!

_M6C4565T_stompShe recently graduated from high school and has been spending her summer preparing for the musical production of “Little Mermaid” at the Richmond Civic Theatre. Who’s she playing? None other than Ariel. And just like Ariel, Holly will soon be exploring new worlds. What’s really cool is Holly’s boyfriend is playing Prince Eric along side her. Not only in the theatre, he was right there for her during her senior photos, carry extra clothing changes, props, making her smile, and sharing in the experience. (see end of post)

_M6C4550T_stompA senior session should always reflect who you are, and Holly did a great job of incorporating elements that highlight her personality. She loves to read and picked out a few of her favorite books to incorporate into some of the images.

_M6C4623T_stompAnother important element of incorporating her personality into the shoot was choosing a location special to her. She choose to stay on her family’s property where we had access to a lot of different niches to shoot in. The creek is a special place to her so we headed there for some shots.

_M6C4785T_stompNew worlds await Holly and I know she’s going to be great at whatever she chooses or wherever she goes.

_M6C4768T_stompIf you have a chance, catch Holly this week-end at the Richmond Civic Theatre for the final performances of “Disney’s The Little Mermaid.”

P.S. We had to get a shot with “Prince Eric” just for fun!

You remember this right? This is one of my favorite images from Erica and Clark’s maternity shoot. Simple, clean, elegant, a beautiful belly… Now it’s time to meet the newest member of the family, Andrew.

Andrew wasn’t so happy posing for his newborn photo shoot. In fact, he had a lot to say about not being in his mama’s arms.

She’s graceful. Light on her toes, even being several months pregnant. Erica was in her fifth season with the Dayton Ballet and had just finished the most recent production of the all time holiday favorite “The Nutcracker” right before our photo shoot.  A Butler University grad, Erica spent her summers in dance workshops in New York and traveled to Cape Town, South Africa to perform a world premiere ballet before marrying Clark, one of the most big-hearted dentist I know.

When we set up a date for our photo shoot, none of us knew just how cold it was going to be. To get  that “just right light”, we met at 7:45 in the morning at one of my favorite spots where the light is always magical.

Totally worth rising early! I could pile on the layers of clothes, but Erica and Clark had to tough it out for the sake of some amazing shots. Between shivering and teeth clattering, they pulled it off.

Now it gets even more amazing. Erica wanted to capture her love of dancing. Being very pregnant, she managed to change into her tutu (in the car!), walk though several inches of snow (with Clark’s assistance) and pose for some more great shots.

Mother’s Day Gift Idea::Richmond, IN Photographer, Indianapolis, IN Photographer

by May 6th, 2013 No Comments »

Six days and counting! That’s it until Mother’s Day. So for all the dads out there still searching for that just perfect present, or moms who are still dropping hints to their guys and kids for that perfect gift to honor them–think about a gift card for a photography session. Time is fragile, gone before you can even grasp it in your hand. The kids change, you change, you remember when… So, before you order another bouquet of flowers, or buy another piece of jewelry, consider giving a gift that will be with her forever. I can think of nothing better than a family portrait or a portrait of mom with her children to celebrate how special she is.

(Gift cards may be applied to the session fee, prints, albums, or wall art).

Indiana Photographer:: Co Sponsor for Local Art Exhibits

by March 30th, 2013 No Comments »

I’ve been incredibly fortunate to become part of a powerful story telling initiative. For a couple  years I’ve been photographing mother and daughter pairs during a Girls Inc. annual event. The idea of the event is to have a variety of activities for mothers and daughters to interact in together. It’s a fun morning for the pairs, trying new things, meeting new people, and spending time with each other.

While the images were enjoyed for those photographed, we thought about how else we could share them with the community, and came up with the idea of a traveling exhibit. What I’m especially excited about is that our mother/daughter pairs have contributed their thoughts about each other, the experience, and what they see in the photograph through a written statement that accompanies their image, making for a powerful presentation. (Bring a Kleenex if you read these statements!)

And now, after months of planning, the exhibit will launch at Reid Hospital & Healthcare on May 6, 2013. Just in time for Mother’s Day.

This collection of images helps illustrate the complex, on-going mother daughter relationship. There are moments of intimacy. There are moments of laughter. And yes, there can be moments of anger. Our mothers define our seeds of origin. These women who gave birth to us are the ones we can thank for the curve of our nose, our clear skin, our ample waists, our gentle or quick tempered personalities, and our humorous idiosyncrasies. And whether birth is given or not, a mother influences our initial view of the world, how we treat others, and how we envision ourselves fitting in to society.

So, here is the official press release if you want to get the 411. Hope to see you at one of the shows! And make sure to watch the video teaser!

As We Are: A Photographic Exhibit of Mothers and Daughters

Girls Inc. of Wayne County, in partnership with Susanna Tanner Photography and sponsor Reid Hospital & Health Care Services, announce As We Are: A Photographic Exhibit of Mothers and Daughters.  This exhibit highlights mothers and daughters from across our community who participated in one of Girls Inc.’s Mother-Daughter workshops.  As We Are opens at the MacDowell Gallery in Reid Hospital & Health Care Services on May 6, 2013.

As We Are captures the unique relationship between mothers and daughters.  The exhibit explores universal themes of love, tension, care and emotion as expressed through the intimacy of each portrait.  Mothers and daughters were invited to share statements about their relationship and what they saw in the photograph.  These statements add another layer of meaning and depth to the powerful exhibit.

Reid Hospital Foundation Director Jason Troutwine describes his strong interest in the exhibit and their sponsorship, stating “Girls Inc. does a wonderful job of teaching, empowering and inspiring our young ladies. Hopefully, as folks see these photos displayed in MacDowell Gallery, they are reminded of women who have influenced their own lives. Reid Hospital is proud to sponsor and host this moving exhibit.”

Girls Inc. Co-Executive Director Beth Harrick is enthusiastic about the exhibit: “Susanna has a gift for capturing the deep connections of these mother-daughter relationships.  You can see the strength and uniqueness of each relationship in the photographs, in all kinds of different poses and expressions.  It is a great tribute to these mothers’ and daughters’ love for one another, and it is great art.”

As We Are opens at Reid Hospital and Health Care Services in the MacDowell Gallery before traveling to six additional exhibit sites.  Sites include Roscoe’s Coffee Shop, Morrisson Reeves Library, Centerville Library, Hagerstown Library, Indiana University East and the Women’s Fund of the Wayne County Foundation Luncheon.  As We Are is made possible by the generous support of Reid Hospital and Health Care Services, Girls Inc., and Susanna Tanner Photography.  Indiana University East will host a closing reception for the exhibit before its final display at the Women’s Fund’s 2014 Luncheon.

Family Photography in Richmond Indiana at the Cope Environmental Center :: Meet the Jacksons

by March 22nd, 2013 No Comments »

Trying to coordinate clothing and schedules can become challenging when it comes to family photography, but the Jackson family did a great job of making something that can be complex look EASY.  We had been talking for awhile about various ideas for their family photo session and decided on shooting at the Cope Environmental Center in Richmond, Indiana. It turned out to be the perfect location to allow Benjamin and Lydia all the room and freedom to be themselves and have a bit of adventure. “I love how you just went with what they were already doing.  They didn’t feel pressured to move and pose a certain way.  They even got to eat the apples,” stated Brandi (mom).  Little did I know when I picked them out that Lydia and Benjamin LOVE green apples.

Brandi enjoys photography herself and knows just how much energy can go into shooting kids. When I asked her what everyone’s favorite part of the session was she said, “Well, for Benjamin it was the apples, Lydia liked posing for the pile up picture, and for me it was the whole thing–it was great having someone else working to get the smiles and poses. For Daniel, well… he enjoyed looking at the end results.

Family photographs mean more when personal objects can be incorporated. Benjamin has loved “things that go” since he was one year old.  Trucks, trains, airplanes…he has always been fascinated with them.  His great grandpa was in the Air Force and helped foster his love of planes by finding cool toy planes everywhere he went. Benjamin still is the first to spot planes, trains, and any construction equipment and point them out to the rest of his family.

The Jacksons have fun together no matter what they are doing!  They play together a lot; taking walks, playing games, swimming, reading, watching movies, dancing around the house, and laughing.

Lydia started dance class when she was 3. Like most kids, she wanted to try something new after a couple years. But now at age 7, she is back in dance and loves every second of it. She especially loves ballet with all the stretches and pointy toes and was recently selected to perform parts in the Nutcracker with a Chicago dance company and the Richmond Symphony Orchestra.  I’m impressed!

It’s not just about the kids! Mom and Dad should be captured as much as the kids.

Pure happiness

It was fun spending time with Benjamin, Lydia, Brandi and Daniel. I hope these images will spark a reminder back to a fun day eating apples and dancing in the sunlight.

Maternity: Brittany + Ryan

by January 10th, 2013 No Comments »

One pose (seriously would I ask her to move more than necessary?), two different looks. Brittany and Ryan chose their home to set the stage for their maternity photographs and it was there I learned that not only did both Ryan and Brittany serve our country (Ryan served in the United States Marine Corps and Naval Academy, Brittany in the United States Army), but that this momma-to-be deployed to Iraq in support of Operation New Dawn where she served as a line pilot, Battle Captain, and a Flight Company Platoon Leader. Pretty impressive Brittany.

I love the peaceful look on Brittany’s face in this shot. She looks totally at home with Ryan.

As of this post, little Eli hasn’t made his way into the world yet (any moment now), but when he does he’s got two great parents ready and waiting.
