You believe in your story. I surrender to it. Capture it. And hand it back to you in a way you can remember forever.

You're about to embark on the most wonderful of adventures. Because you're here that tells me you value epic, mind-blowing photography. Well done!

I'm fortunate, and sometimes I have to pinch myself when I think about how much I love what I do. I illustrate every story you trust me with.

Incredible photographs result from a trusted relationship between us. This comes from a friendship, and from time invested in getting to know you, and why you have chosen the different elements that will make up your wedding day. Think of me as a visual biographer of sorts, a narrator, telling your story through the images of your day.

I want you to be blown away by how beautiful you really are, by how beautiful I see you to be.

Lets get started!

+ you are beautiful

Engagement Photo Shoot at Hayes Arboretum, Richmond Indiana

by November 7th, 2017 No Comments »

A fate-driven, life-changing journey. That’s how Harry describes his working relationship turned love-of-his-life experience with Shana. She is his soulmate and best friend. And soon to be his wife.

wooded engagement photography

They wanted their engagement photo shoot at Hayes Arboretum to be the setting for our time together. Shana loves the arches and the outdoors suits them well. Engagement shoots can be some of my favorite times to spend with couples. There is so much energy between them, along with anticipation for the future. The pace is slow, and let’s be honest, it’s great practice for the wedding day.

Harry has a wonderful way expressing himself in words so I’ll let him speak for the emotions of our afternoon together. “Our perfectly imperfect family seems to mesh just as if it was meant to be, and I seriously can’t imagine life any other way. Shana and I are literally opposites to one another. Her strengths are my weaknesses and alternatively I feel my strengths compliment her weaknesses. She has challenged me to not take life so seriously and sometimes just “roll with it” and know what will be will be and it will work out. When I see seriously in love elderly couples relying on one another, I know that’s what I see in her in I. When I see them helping one another into the doctors, or to open a sandwich wrapper, these everyday life activities that ultimately become struggles with age, are the lifelong  benchmarks that I know I will see with this woman. The good, the bad, the just ok, we will take it all as it comes and know it will never be taken alone. I absolutely cannot wait to see what is in store for us as spouses, parents, and hopefully one day grandparents as we go through this thing called life together” writes Harry.

Here’s to the girl who is the yin to Harry’s yang, and to a beautiful summer evening turning into a lifetime of helping each other with sandwich wrappers, holding doors open, doctor appointments together and lots and lots of happiness.

Indiana Engagement Photography, Hannah and Sam

by May 26th, 2017 1 Comment »

engagement photographyThis Indiana engagement photography session all began with a few messages and texts, which led to a FaceTime date. Hannah was prepared with a notecard of talking points – it was the start of Shark Week which is their” thing”. When it was time to meet face-to-face, Sam remembers just how bright the stars were. The weather was warm, his heart was pounding with nervousness and excitement, and he had no idea what to expect. The moment his eyes caught a glimpse of her in that beautiful, pink summer dress as she walked out her front door, his world stopped. His breath was taken away; he knew she was the one.

Engagement photography engagement photography

Their relationship has been long-distance since the beginning. Visits were limited to weekends, minus a few surprise visits when they needed to see each other. Both will admit that the distance has been a challenge, but the feeling each has when they are together is what makes it all worthwhile. Sam will tell you that his heart still skips a beat every time he sees Hannah. Her beauty is not just on the outside but radiates from within. She makes him laugh, she is his rock, and she brightens every day with her gorgeous smile.

Hannah finds comfort in his arms. Sam drives her so crazy that she can only laugh. Sam supports her in everything she does and that only can make her smile. And, when Sam kisses her she only feels warmth and love. Hannah stated she knew the moment she saw Sam that he was the one God sent for her.

Every session leads to some less-than-traditional portraits, but ultimately shows the energy of the shoot. I love this image of Hannah smiling as she manages herself through the great outdoors in heels while Sam is being chivalrous with the flowers.

Engagement Photography in the Woods, Ella and Daniel

by May 11th, 2017 No Comments »

Joy. You can see it in their eyes. Meet Ella and Daniel. Two love birds who are getting married just a few short weeks. Their love is fresh, young, infectious and full of passion. And clearly, they feel complete when they’re together. Their Engagement Photography in the Woods was one of the most difficult to edit because they don’t really take a bad photo.

Ella was off on a path to play college volleyball before an injury occurred  her senior year. Healing down time was spent at her parents restaurant where Daniel was starting his first head chef position at Ella’s parent’s restaurant “The Kitchen“. Neither of them were searching for love but friendship seemed to blossom. Daniel brought and taught Ella how to play the ukulele between breaks, because he knew she loved music and singing, and would need a new focus.

Their faith and common interest in food, music, and the outdoors brought them close. Daniel kept bringing Ella handmade pasta, muffins and more items to try all the while not knowing that as a little girl, Ella had always said that she would marry a chef to cook just for her.

Shortly after Christmas, Daniel proposed to Ella at a waterfall. He bought her a 1930’s diamond flower engagement ring from Foster’s Antique Store, owned by a long-time family friend.

The two are looking forward to always having their faith and each other, and plan to build a house in the woods shortly after the wedding.

Engagement Photography in the Woods, Richmond, IN : Trisha and Joe

by April 23rd, 2017 No Comments »

Trisha and Joe called me a couple of months ago to plan their engagement photography shoot for the spring. Of course, in Indiana scheduling around spring weather can be a shot in the dark. But we got incredibly lucky on our spring day in the woods.

The two met at summer camp when they were 9 but didn’t really know each other until high school when Trisha gave Joe her “spare” ticket to the snowball dance to go as friends. Joe insisted on “paying her back” for the ticket with dinner & a movie. And THAT was the beginning of their story.

The proposal: (read this, it’s so sweet!) As a nurse, Trisha knew months in advance she would have to work Christmas Eve. Wanting Joe to have some quality time off during the holidays, she encouraged him to fly home to Allentown, PA to spend time with family during Christmas because she would only be home for a couple hours between shifts. So, Trisha kissed Joe goodbye Christmas Eve morning and went to work. It was a heartbreaking shift. Trisha was upset to be away from family and Joe. Once her shift was over and she was back home, she received a call from Joe asking how work went and what she was going to do Christmas morning. They wished each other Merry Christmas, said their “I love you’s” and hung up. Sigh.

Then there was a knock on the door. It was Joe, and he was in Richmond all along! Trisha ran around the house jumping for joy like a new puppy greets its owner all because he stayed back for her. Once all the excitement settle and she stopped rambling about how happy she was, Joe explained the reasoning behind staying in Indiana–he didn’t want to spend any more holidays apart (Trisha was thinking this was so sweet–but absolutely no clue) then he got down on one knee. You know the rest. After that Trisha fell to the ground and sobbed. And more importantly, said yes!

“It was intimate. It was private. It was beautiful and it was us. I couldn’t have asked for a better moment. We never talked about rings or anything. Joe said he chose the ring to resemble my mothers ring and my grandmothers ring. Two women with the most beautiful marriages,” said Trisha. “We cannot wait to devote ourselves to each other more and more every day. I also cannot wait to hold hands with him, every day, in prayer, on walks, and through all life’s beautiful moments.”

Balancing play and seriousness…these two have it down.

xoxo to this special couple. Thanks for allowing me to spend a couple of hours sharing in your story.

Engagement Photography-Richmond, IN-Kayla and Grant

by March 18th, 2017 No Comments »

A picture is worth a thousand words. And in the case of Kayla and Grant’s engagement photography session that seems to be the right sentiment. Admittedly, when we first planned the shoot I was slightly (okay a little more than slightly) skeptical we could pull off the shoot given it was only the second week of February in Indiana, but we got lucky that particular day (60 degree temps!) and walked away feeling confident in our session and had fun being outside as well. I kind of felt like we snuck one over on the weather gods.

Take a look for yourself!

Vintage Chic Orchard Engagement Photo Shoot

Vintage Chic Orchard Engagement Photo Shoot :: Haley and Garrett

From the moment she met him, she knew there was something special going on. A student at Indiana University Bloomington, Haley ran into Garrett when he decided to visit the campus with one of his friends. The two enjoyed talking, laughing and getting to know each other one night and to Haley’s surprise, the next day Garrett told one of their mutual friends he was interested in getting to know her more. She was elated, and texted her mom to tell her she had met the man she was going to marry. He just didn’t know it yet. How’s that for certainty? Her mom still has that text. Haley can’t explain exactly what it was she felt that night that made her feel so certain, she just knew. Sure enough, after spending time together for a few months they realize they were a perfect match.

Fast forward two years to this past July 3rd. It was the second birthday Haley has celebrated with Garrett. She thought it would be fun to mark the occasion by searching for succulents to create an arrangement for her apartment. Succulent shopping and going to dinner were a great was to spend her birthday, not to mention a summer concert and the fourth of July fireworks overlooking a nearby lake the night before.

Garrett told Haley he had another present for her. He handed her a distressed white wooden box with their names carved in it. His dad is a very talented carpenter and Garrett knew Haley loved anything that looked antique or distressed. She was still unsuspecting at that moment and told Garrett how thoughtful it was for him to learn to make her a jewelry box. But when she opened the box there was a written letter for her, asking her to spend forever with him.

We were able to incorporate Haley’s vintage-chic sensibilities into their orchard engagement photo shoot, thanks to her organization and planning. A family quilt, an old wooden bench and an old Crosley record player added to the reflection of her sense of style. A special furry family member also made the shoot much more fun. (I love dogs.)

The shoes!!!

The shoes!!!

The future is bright for Haley and Garrett. After graduation Garrett will be attending law school, and Haley hopes to put her apparel merchandising major and business minor to work, finding a place in the retail industry and eventually owning her own boutique. In the midst of all that, there is a wedding to plan. I can’t wait for this summer!

xoxo

Engagement Photo Shoot :: Ellie and Ian

by October 25th, 2016 2 Comments »

A Purdue University Engagement Photo Shoot

I’ve known her since she was two, maybe three. Its the age when little girls love combing long hair, and I had long hair. When I went to her house and sat on the floor, Ellie would grab a brush and begin methodically combing my hair. It was like a massage. Little girl grown to  young woman, she’s about to officially graduate from Purdue and begin a life with her love. What better place for an engagement photo shoot.

It was homecoming weekend at Purdue University. Ian, recently graduated, and Ellie, soon to graduate, attended a volleyball game. Reliving old memories, they walked around the campus with friends and family. As they headed toward the clapping circles on campus, Ian decided he wanted to go the longest way possible which took them by the Bell Tower. They posed for a couple of quick snapshots and then it happened. Ian teared up, telling Ellie how much he loved her and declared he wanted them to spend the rest of their lives together. You know the rest… he got down on one knee and said what every girl wants to hear, “Ellie Christine, will you marry me?”

We started the day at Harrys Chocolate Shop, a long-time gathering spot for students and alumni alike, and a favorite hangout for Ellie and Ian.

Then we stopped by the iconic Engineering fountain. (If you’re a Purdue University alum, I bet you can feel the memories come flooding back, eh?)

Ellie’s usually smiling and always up for anything, and once the official photographs had been taken, she convinced Ian to peel off his shirt and do a fountain run. Part of the Purdue University Boilermaker tradition for students, faculty and alumni is to run through the five beautiful fountains on campus. Watch here! So what better way to end an engagement shoot on a hot, sultry day? After all, it’s about a bit of adventure. (Only we kept it to one fountain.)

“The real power of a man is in the size of the smile of the woman sitting next to him.”  I read that somewhere and it seems like Ian must be doing something right.

xoxo

Indianapolis photography workshop :: Engagement photography

by April 26th, 2016 No Comments »

Her long, red hair danced in the air as she gave us a very animated presentation. Indianapolis photographer Bobbi Sheridan led our group with tips, tricks, empathy, and encouragement. Picture it in your mind. A handful or two of newbie and seasoned photographers sitting together talking industry/photographic speak and sharing stories. What could be better? I know, it must sound weird to you.  But for me, there’s nothing better.

I’ll put myself in the bracket of being “seasoned”. I think I’ve earned that adjective. But there is always, always something new to learn from someone.  So, we trudged off to downtown Indianapolis and followed Bobbi around like ducklings following their mother.  Bobbi had arranged an engaged couple to be our models for the afternoon. Enter Leigh Ann and Andre. An adorable couple who are getting married soon. We walked from location to location in downtown Indianapolis trying out different backgrounds, different lighting scenarios, and different poses.  Some ideas worked. Others didn’t. Some situations were flat out frustrating. But that’s life. And it’s always fun to experiment when there’s nothing at stake.

Thank you Bobbi, for sharing your secrets and inviting inspiring guest speakers. I walked away being reminded that the life of a photographer is not an easy one, but one I would never trade!

This is one of my favorites. Andre has an award-winning smile.

Engagement Photos: What to wear?

by December 7th, 2015 No Comments »

Engagement photos are a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to pull out all the stops for your portraits. They offer the chance to get comfortable in front of the camera, show your personalities, and it gives me the opportunity to get to you the two of you better. It’s a time to have some fun, become more at ease with being photographed before your wedding day, and create a memory together!

But most people aren’t quite sure what to wear. Most engagement shoots offer time to change your outfit, so I suggest one fancy-schmancy outfit and one more casual. But what about colors and patterns and styles?

1. COORDINATE This doesn’t mean wearing matching outfits. In fact, looking matchy-matchy is an outdated trend. But your looks should fit together. There are two aspects to coordinating:

-Level of formality-If she’s dressed to the nines, he shouldn’t be in a sports jersey.
-Color Palette-Drawing from the same color palette is a great way to coordinate. You want a cohesive look so that the viewer looking at your images doesn’t stop to even question if you belong together. They’ll know just by how well you coordinate.

You’ve been told to not wear certain patterns but pattern is a perfect way to FIND the colors to coordinate. Choose an item of clothing with a pattern and then draw colors from within it to create the palette for your outfits.

Tom and Maria's clothing choices are perfect! Both are patterns but they are complimentary. The tiny white pattern is just enough to elevate her dress to the next level and yet not complete with the plaid of Tom's shirt.

Tom and Maria’s clothing choices are perfect! Both are patterns but they are complimentary. The tiny white pattern is just enough to elevate her dress to the next level and yet not complete with the plaid of Tom’s shirt. It even works well with the rug.

Above is another example of dynamic coordinating! Two prints that go marvelously together based on color (blue) and the sizes of the print. Tom’s check print holds things steady while Maria adds a dash of her personality with bright colors and a large print.

You can never go wrong with a pattern and a solid in coordinating colors.

2. LAYER and ACCESSORIZE Layers and accessories add depth and interest to your photos. They can also turn a decent outfit into a stunning one. Scarves, hats, large chunky necklaces that coordinate with a color in his shirt….

Whitney's hat adds a feeling of flair and fun to the photo.

Most importantly, be yourselves. If you’ve purchased something new, make sure you’ve tried it on ahead of time for the best fit and comfort.

And back to the idea of fancy-schmancy…if it appeals to you but you just don’t have the right dress hanging in your closet, rent your dream dress from Rent the Runway for your session. It’s kind of like playing dress up, only better!

Indiana Warehouse Engagement Shoot: Whitney and Josh

by October 4th, 2015 5 Comments »

I’ve made a decision– to try as often as possible to surround myself with positive people. Not necessarily people who give the appearance of always being over-the top happy and seem to have life figured out. No, what I mean is the kind of people who own their difficult stories and yet come away from them strong. People who integrate their falls into their experiences, bringing about a sense of “wholeness” to themselves.

Meet Whitney and Josh. She is the newest #STPBride. They are two people that have this incredible warm presence about them–making you feel like you’ve known them for years. They’re funny, sensitive, adventurous, and V E R Y  in love. The kind of people you want to surround yourself with.

Whitney decided to hold her engagement session in a family owned warehouse.  The surfaces and textures were a photographer’s delight, along with tiny openings in the building’s exterior that let in these delicious rays of light.  Josh and Whitney were pros, working the camera in an old warehouse on a hot, humid summer afternoon. It’s easy to photograph people who have a great time being with each other.

Here are a few of my favorites from their warehouse engagement session.

It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. It turns problems into gifts, failures into successes, the

  • Matt and his Dad started throwing tomahawks this spring with friends and family. The hawks he throws are hand-forged by an artisan from Oxford Ohio (beaverbill.com) who does turn-of-the-century forging and tooling. The goal of tomahawk throwing is purely recreational. The tomahawks are thrown toward the target which is a section of tree trunk or planks of soft wood. Some people participate in competitions and in this case the hawks have to complete one 360 degree rotation before hitting the intended target.
Matt’s plans after graduation from RHS include attending college to pursue a degree in engineering, possibly architectural engineering.
