Richmond Indiana Photographer Co Sponsor for Local Art Exhibits
I’ve been incredibly fortunate to become part of a powerful story telling initiative. For a couple years I’ve been photographing mother and daughter pairs during a Girls Inc. annual event. The idea of the event is to have a variety of activities for mothers and daughters to interact in together. It’s a fun morning for the pairs, trying new things, meeting new people, and spending time with each other.
While the images were enjoyed for those photographed, we thought about how else we could share them with the community, and came up with the idea of a traveling exhibit. What I’m especially excited about is that our mother/daughter pairs have contributed their thoughts about each other, the experience, and what they see in the photograph through a written statement that accompanies their image, making for a powerful presentation. (Bring a Kleenex if you read these statements!)
And now, after months of planning, the exhibit will launch at Reid Hospital & Healthcare on May 6, 2013. Just in time for Mother’s Day.
This collection of images helps illustrate the complex, on-going mother daughter relationship. There are moments of intimacy. There are moments of laughter. And yes, there can be moments of anger. Our mothers define our seeds of origin. These women who gave birth to us are the ones we can thank for the curve of our nose, our clear skin, our ample waists, our gentle or quick tempered personalities, and our humorous idiosyncrasies. And whether birth is given or not, a mother influences our initial view of the world, how we treat others, and how we envision ourselves fitting in to society.
So, here is the official press release if you want to get the 411. Hope to see you at one of the shows! And make sure to watch the video teaser!
As We Are: A Photographic Exhibit of Mothers and Daughters
Girls Inc. of Wayne County, in partnership with Susanna Tanner Photography and sponsor Reid Hospital & Health Care Services, announce As We Are: A Photographic Exhibit of Mothers and Daughters. This exhibit highlights mothers and daughters from across our community who participated in one of Girls Inc.’s Mother-Daughter workshops. As We Are opens at the MacDowell Gallery in Reid Hospital & Health Care Services on May 6, 2013.
As We Are captures the unique relationship between mothers and daughters. The exhibit explores universal themes of love, tension, care and emotion as expressed through the intimacy of each portrait. Mothers and daughters were invited to share statements about their relationship and what they saw in the photograph. These statements add another layer of meaning and depth to the powerful exhibit.
Reid Hospital Foundation Director Jason Troutwine describes his strong interest in the exhibit and their sponsorship, stating “Girls Inc. does a wonderful job of teaching, empowering and inspiring our young ladies. Hopefully, as folks see these photos displayed in MacDowell Gallery, they are reminded of women who have influenced their own lives. Reid Hospital is proud to sponsor and host this moving exhibit.”
Girls Inc. Co-Executive Director Beth Harrick is enthusiastic about the exhibit: “Susanna has a gift for capturing the deep connections of these mother-daughter relationships. You can see the strength and uniqueness of each relationship in the photographs, in all kinds of different poses and expressions. It is a great tribute to these mothers’ and daughters’ love for one another, and it is great art.”
As We Are opens at Reid Hospital and Health Care Services in the MacDowell Gallery before traveling to six additional exhibit sites.
